Marya Okoth: Education, Illustrious Career, Motherhood And Marriage To YY

Marya Okoth- is an award winning actress who has won the hearts of many Kenyans with her incredible acting skills. While she is relatively new in the industry, her talent has seen her bag an award. Her dedication and supportive partner will only see her acting career on an upward trajectory.

Background and Education 

Born in Homa Bay, she attended local primary school before heading to Butere Girls for high school.

Later, she joined Kenyatta University where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Interior design in 2022.

Acting Career 

The mother of one fell in love with acting from a young age. She was part of the school’s drama club and often told her classmates that she would be on TV one day.

Her high school days moulded her into becoming the actor she is today. She credits her director for sharpening her skills. 

“My director taught us that akikupatia role you have to internalize it. So, as a creative it’s so subconscious that we are so conversant. Me socializing with different people helps a lot. So sometimes I try to picture myself to be another person and practice,” she said in a past interview. 

The actress first appeared on YouTube clips done by YY comedian and here she showcased her wonderful acting skills. 

In 2023, she got a role as a receptionist in Eddie Buitita’s film A Nurse Toto. The series was a hit among fans gaining hundreds of thousands of views per episodes. Here, she played Maryann, a pretty receptionist who didn’t bother to be courteous to people visiting the hospital. 

She was also a in YY’s drama called Dinga Ya Wife. 

In the recently concluded Pulse 2023 awards, she won most influential actress and thanked her fans and husband YY.

Relationship and paralysis 

Marya is married to popular comedian YY and the two have a daughter.

In 2021, the internet was lit up with allegations that Tumekuja Chokoza hitmaker Mary Maina Wanjiru (Marya) was running a brothel on Thika Road.

Expose by blogger Obare

This came after an expose by blogger Edgar Obare alleged that she had been soliciting customers of the trade online.

The beautiful artiste has, however, vehemently denied the allegations, saying she was just keeping the bad company at the time.

In an interview with Eve Mungai, Marya said some people may never understand, but all she did was for her son and as a mother, you can do anything for your child to be happy.

Bad group of women

"I just found myself associating with a bad group of women and that is how my brand disappeared just like that," said Marya.

According to Marya, when Obare approached her, he never really wanted to hear her side of the story and came with a pre-determined position.

"I don't have anything against him but I wish things would have played out differently, " said Marya.

Struggling to come back

After the expose and other life challenges, Marya said she has been struggling to come back to the limelight, but it hasn't been easy.

According to the beauty, the comeback has not been easy as she does not have the money required to produce an audio or video clip.

    Judith Nyambura Mwangi (born 30 April 1986), who is better known as Avril (), is a Kenyan singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur. She was formerly signed to Ogopa Deejays, one of the leading music production and record labels in Kenya. As a singer, she is known for the singles "Mama", "Kitu Kimoja", "Chokoza" and "Hakuna Yule". As an actress, she is best known for playing Miss B'Have on Shuga: Love, Sex, Money (2012). Avril's contributions to the Kenyan entertainment industry have earned her one Nzumari Award, one Kisima Music Award, one Golden Mic Award and two Chaguo La Teeniez Awards.

    Avril was born and raised in Nakuru, the former capital of the Rift Valley Province. She was very active in drama and music festivals while in high school. Avril later relocated to Nairobi to pursue an undergraduate education. In 2005, she partook in the Jaza Lorry initiative and met talent manager Emmanuel Banda of Ogopa Deejays Production. Although Banda tried convincing her to venture into music, Avril remained hesitant at the time. She enrolled at the University of Nairobi in 2006 and studied design. She changed her mind about music during her second year at UoN, and recorded her debut single "Mama" after signing a record deal with Ogopa D
