“The professional art dealer is a profession that only makes sense if you do it with your heart,” explains Angela Rosengart, as she leads me through the ground floor of the collection that bears her name. She wears a pink sweater highlighted by a necklace of gold-colored pedants. Her silvery hair is tied back tight around her head. Speaking from half a century of art acquisitions, she continues, adding that a dealer shouldn’t get too attached to the paintings. If that happens, you’re in trouble, since you might find it difficult to sell them and maintain the business.

Angela is the daughter of Siegfried Rosengart, who passed away in 1985 after a lucrative career as one of the 20th century’s most distinguished art dealers. Based in Lucerne, Switzerland, he and Angela operated the business together for decades, often purchasing works for their own personal appreciation rather than for any intention of moving them as product. In the process of becoming close friends with Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee and nearly every high-profile European artist from the 1940s onward, the Rosengarts amassed an unrivaled collection. As dealers, they knew everyone.

After her father died, Angela eventually created a foundation to keep the paintings and make them publicly available. Since 2002, the Rosengart Collection, now over 300 works, has occupied the austere neoclassical building at Pilatusstrasse 10 in Lucerne, formerly the Swiss National Bank, just a few blocks from where the Reuss River flows into the lake. Upon acquiring the old place, Angela hired the Basel-based architect Roger Diener to transform the building into a museum-style structure with subtle lighting and wide spaces to enhance the viewer’s experience of the artwork. Much of the original ornamentation remains. Diener wanted a simple look. Nothing superfluous, nothing grandiose.

We had the privilege of speaking to the Rosengart Foundation`s president and ‘grande dame of art’ Angela Rosengart, to find out more about the delights that await on this intimate and exclusive experience.

Now aged 90, Angela Rosengart started working for her father at the then Galerie Rosengart when she was 16, and it became her lifelong passion. In 1992 she established the Rosengart Foundation to put the private works on display to the public, and 10 years later in 2002 she opened up the museum.

The Rosengart Collection

The Rosengart Collection is housed in an elegant gallery in Lucerne, a neo-classical palazzo originally constructed for the Swiss National Bank. The collection features 180 works by Pablo Picasso, 125 by Paul Klee plus works from other world-famous 19th and 20th century masters, including Cezanne, Chagall, Monet, Matisse, Miró and Léger.

“The collection is perhaps so special because it is formed by only two people, myself and my father Siegfried Rosengart,” says Angela Rosengart. “So, it is different to what you might see in museums that have been formed by generations of directors. I think people feel it that it is something quite unique.”

The Rosengart Collection Museum (Museum Sammlung Rosengart) is an art museum located in Lucerne, Switzerland. It houses a collection of modern art based on two main artists: Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso.

Collection

The art dealer Siegfried Rosengart (1894-1985), who worked in Munich with his uncle Heinrich Thannhauser before moving to Lucerne, had contacts with Picasso and Marc Chagall. With his daughter, Angela, he built a modern art collection containing works by Vassily Kandinsky,Georges Braque, Chaïm Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani, Fernand Léger, Georges Seurat, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, Paul Cézanne ou Claude Monet, as well as Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, Maurice Utrillo, Georges Rouault, Henri Matisse ou encore Joan Miró.

His Klee collection is the largest in private hands after that of the artist's family. Some of his Picassos were exhibited at the musée Picasso de Lucerne opened in 1978 by the Rosengarts, to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the city.

His only daughter, Angela, founded the Fondation Rosengart in 1992. The Rosengart Collection opened in March 2002 and received more than 100,000 visitors in the following twelve months.

Building

The former neoclassical building of the Swiss National Bank, built in 1923-1924 by the Zurich architect Hermann Herter, is purchased and its conversion entrusted to the architect Roger Diener. The art museum opened on March 26, 2002.
