And the makeup artist has earned her spot on the A-list, too, working her butt off in the business for 16 years to score coveted editorial jobs for the likes of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle, plus work with esteemed photographers, including Annie Leibovitz, Max Vadukul, and kingmaker Patrick Demarchelier.

My big break as a makeup artist:
I assisted big artists like Pati Dubroff and Stephane Marais, so it was great to be on set and see what kind of work they do as far as collaborations with magazines and celebrities and photographers. But I would say my biggest break was when I had my first Harper’s Bazaar cover with Britney Spears [in August 2006]. It was an iconic one because she was brunette and pregnant and kind of naked on the cover. The photographer was Alexi Lubomirski. He’s really cute. He used to be a model.

The one moment when I knew I really made it:
When my peers — other makeup artists or hair stylists — come up to me or when we talk and they’re like, ‘oh my god, I love your work.’ Just being recognized by your peers, that was really cool. [Also, one moment when] Patti Dubroff, whom I assisted for a bit, came up to me and congratulated me. She’s like, ‘oh I want to have you do my makeup one day because I love, I love your aesthetic. I love what I’m seeing.’ So that was really cool to see that someone I assisted and looked up to would want me to do their makeup.

My advice to aspiring makeup artists:
Hard work and determination is really important and you should never give up if you have a dream to do makeup. Obviously, when people see what kind of work that I do as a celebrity makeup artist, it seems really awesome, but it is hard work. We wake up at crazy hours and [have] long days and then sometimes work for editorial rates — or no rates — but we do it because we love our clients, the magazine,
