But then there are those who have somehow found a way to showcase their works to the bigwigs of Hollywood, and 21-year-old Abraham Pieters is one of them. YouthPaper spoke to the young filmmaker and how he made his dream come true.
Background Story
Pieters was born and bred in Windhoek and matriculated from Jan Möhr Secondary School in 2013. He immediately applied to the College of the Arts (Cota) in Windhoek to pursue a career in film-making. “This is my last year at Cota. I’m currently an intern at NBC. I also studied advanced drama at Brumilda’s Acting Academy in Johannesburg. I successfully completed my drama studies and I’m about to complete my film studies soon. So a lot of sacrificing … “
Apart from his training, he pursued other creative interests. “I’m a freelance radio presenter, fashion designer as well as the co-founder of the Nam Acting Club. Nam Acting Club is where my partner, Selima Henock, and I mould and teach young and older people who really want to pursue a career in film or television. We give them a global understanding of what the industry is about and how it works. This is just a way of giving back to the community. A lot of people are not as fortunate as others or aware of opportunities and information out there and Nam Acting gives that platform,” Pieters said.
He is also the executive producer of a new show called ‘Afro Space’ – a lifestyle show which covers a range of topics from food, fashion, beauty and inspirational stories. “It is a platform where we talk about anything and everyone. My father, George Pieters, helped me with the financing of the show. Regarding the channel, it will only premiere next year. I’m not sure that matters to me. I have been asked that question many times. I think people want to know that because we live in a society where we look up to the establishment to guide us, take care of us or supply us. We are forgetting that the establishment has never been responsible for change, nor progress. If you look at our history, you will see that it has always been a small group of individuals who have created change. There is a beautiful Margaret Mead quote about this. Sometimes it’s just one person. Like Gandhi or Martin Luther King. They translated their opinions into deeds and created situations that allowed others to follow them. So to be honest, I’m not that curious about what the industry or establishment does, or thinks. Because they, and the ones who follow them, will follow anyway. We, as customers, just need to let them know which direction we want them to go in. And we do that through our purchases.“Every time I buy something I want to make my voice heard.”
The fact that solutions, real solutions, exist today and they are not being used. People are still giving reasons for not acting more responsibly.
