With the exhibition of photographs by Michael Schmidt, the Haus der Kunst presents another formative position in contemporary photography. Works by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Robert Adams, Lee Friedlander, Andreas Gursky and William Eggleston have already been shown as part of this exhibition series.
With original photographs Grey as Colour is the most extensive overview of Michael Schmidt’s work to date. A third of the pieces are new works or . like 89/90, which only existed as working proofs until now . have been edited as a series for the exhibit.

Michael Schmidt has been taking photographs since , analogue and in black-andwhite, and with an unusually broad range of grey tones. For me black and white are always the darkest grey and the lightest grey. (Michael Schmidt ). Micheal Schmidt’s images lack all superficial attraction; they are without incident and as far removed from the photographic concept of the decisive moment as possible; they are neither striking nor narrative. For decades Michael Schmidt has abstained from making composition samples that prove to be exceptional single frame images. He prefers the series, in which the artistic expression is not exhausted in the individual image, but Michael Schmidt OBE FRSL is the founder and editorial and managing director of Carcanet Press Limited and the general editor of PN Review. He was until recently Professor of Poetry and convener of the Creative Writing programme in the Department of English, University of Glasgow. He has also been Writer in Residence at St John's College, Cambridge, and Visiting Fellow Commoner at Trinity College, Cambridge. He is now Professor of Poetry at the University of Manchester, editorial and managing director of Carcanet Press Ltd and folunder and general editor of PN Review. In he completed The Novel: A Biography, published in May , a companion volume to Lives of the Poets (). He photographs large quantities of images without a specific project in mind. These images are then organized into groups with socially evocative titles, such as Ausländische Mitbürger (Foreign Co-citizens, ) or Berlin, Stadtbilder (Berlin, Images of the City, ). He exhibits the work in clusters or groupings intended to draw relationships among the images, often in a public context, and then, circumstances permitting, publishes a book of the images. Unlike many artist monographs, Schmidts books are not intended to catalog discrete images but rather to interconnect images dependant on those associations, mirroring his process of hanging photographs on the wall. The books tend to be light on textoften having none other than the titleand are truly more artist book than monograph, despite mass production by major publishers
