VLADIMIR McCRARY
FROM PARIS WITH LOVE
AMBASSADOR DIGITAL MAGAZINE Editor- In-Chief Musa Jackson @iammusajackson has an in depth Q. & A with pioneering international Black male model Vladimir McCrary. From playing professional International basketball in Europe for Magic Johnson to becoming the muse of the legendary fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier and 90s supermodel stardom. Here is his epic journey from Texas to Paris.
MUSA: Where are you from?
VLADIMIR: I was raised in San Antonio, Texas. It was amazing in the ‘80s. It was boom of everything; Art, fashion, film, music, food. I loved it. Playing basketball. My girlfriend was basketball.
MUSA: At 6’7” you’re uniquely striking. What’s your ancestral background?
VLADIMIR: I’m Cherokee, Native American. And there’s African in there as well. I’m great great great was from Scotland. Hence the last name. Or possibly my great great great owned my people that’s why I have the name. Can I say his blood grows within me. No I can’t say that.
MUSA: For what team overseas were you a professional basketball player for?
VLADIMIR: Well when I came I started playing a lot of different tournaments, all star games. I knew Magic Johnson. We used to play ball at UCLA back in the day. I happened to get on his travel team. Which was a team played in Europe. Magic Johnson and Patrick Ewing. I had came back from playing basketball in Brazil for nine months. I loved Brazil. I came back to L.A. I knew nothing about modeling. My world was sports.
MUSA: So how did you venture into the world of modeling?
VLADIMIR: One day I’m walking from the gym I hear a beep from behind me. It’s the guy with long hair asking me do I want to model. I was like get out of my face. ( laughing) Then he explained to me what was going on gave me a number to this agency. I went to the agency and they looked at me crazy. They gave a name of this photographer so I went shot pictures with this guy. When I came to Paris I saw a Body S
I’m Native American myself, Cherokee and Black. Before I had those adjectives equated to myself, I was a man. I’m a Black man, but at the same time, what exactly is blackness? Now, me being an artist, I’ll tell you how I look at blackness. I’m a poet as well, so bear with me. Blackness to me is that mystery that you don’t know, it’s the unknown. If you want to put something negative to it, if you want to put something beautiful or positive to it, that’s on that person. We separate ourselves too many times with too many different things; with religion, with color, with our different countries. I want to bring things together. I’m a man of mystery. I relate to Black people; I relate to people.
Look at America, how it is. America was built on hurting and separating and really just—excuse my language—fucked up shit. You reap what you sow, and all that shit’s coming back. It’s coming back, and it’s sad. What’s sad is those peoples, and I say peoples, it’s not just white people, those peoples all around the world that have subjugated people and built themselves up on the backs of other people; you can never be anything great holding another people down under your boot—that’s not greatness, that’s a weakness, if you ask me. I want to live my life as a productive, open-minded man, and I try to be the best father I can be to my daughters.
My brand is timeless, my work is fashion history and I’m proud of that, not for myself, I’m proud that my daughters could see these things. I like to see what I did before, not to say, ‘Look what I did,’ but, but to evolve from it, to change with it, to push the envelope.
