Nicole Gilbert is a year-old U.S. citizen. She has lived in Costa Rica, the United States and Portugal all before the age of She was born in Costa Rica. Gilbert has extended family members in the United States, so she visited the USA about twice a year.

At age 14, she from Costa Rica moved to Portugal and learned to fluently speak Portuguese. She also took ballet classes. After a year of dance and a new culture, her family moved her to Colorado, U.S.A. for high school. Homesick and stressed, she came back to Costa Rica to finish her education.

By late , at age 18, she gave America another shot and found a new calling – snowboarding. She lived in Aspen and taught children how to snowboard for the winter season.

Her interests did not stop there; she wanted to keep experiencing new languages and cultures. After a year of snowboarding classes, she moved to Milan, Italy for a while to learn Italian and expand her cultural knowledge. After a few years of that, she went back home to study speech-language pathology at the University of Santa Paula. She missed Colorado and her curiosity eventually brought her back in She has since been saving up to continue her college education. Today, she speaks Italian, English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Gilbert has spent quality time in Costa Rica, Italy, the U.S.A. and Portugal. While she had a complicated living situation, she is very grateful for her travels.

β€œIt can be really difficult to make long-term friendships because the traveling changes whenever my parents move,” she said.

Through her experiences through dance and teaching snowboarding, she has found meaning in relocating. It brought her an artistic and active outlook in life that she carries with her every day. It also allowed her to continue living a full life despite the struggles of being so mobile.

    Family is everything in life. For Nicole Gilbert, it is the most important aspect in life. She was born in Aberdeen, Ohio with her sister and two brothers. At a young age, she remembered visiting her grandmother. Nicole was the first granddaughter born into the family and was named after her grandmother. Nicole knew that she was sick but did not know what she had.

    “I remember clearly not wanting to go to her house because I thought whatever she had that I may catch,” said Nicole. She also thought that since she has the same name as her that she might be sick like her too. “This was my year old self just trying to really figure out what was wrong with her, and how do I not get that.”

    Nicole also had four uncles and three aunts. At the time, the family thought that the sickness was just in their family. They come from a small town where they did not have access to special care facilities as they were never referred to one. Because of this, they took the route of hiding it as they never came into contact with anyone who had Huntington’s disease (HD).

    “It was something that we all just kept really close,” said Nicole. “It was never really talked about, so unfortunately the older I got, the more anxiety grew within me to know what the disease is. “After a few google searches on HD in your early 20’s, you shut it down pretty quick.”

    It is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years and has no cure. At age 39, her mother started showing symptoms of the disease and her brothers shortly after as well. Each child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene that causes Huntington’s disease.

    Biography

    Nicole Gilbert, M.A., CCC-SLP is Director of Clinical Education and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology at MWU. She provides clinical supervision and instruction to SLP graduate students in the Speech-Language Institute. She has experience in working with both elementary and high school students with various speech and language disorders. She has a special interest in working individuals with cognitive-communication disorders due to a variety of neurological diagnoses, including stroke and brain injury, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

She is mainly known for being the lead vocalist of an American female R&B girl-group Brownstone who rose to fame in the mid s best known for their hit single "If You Love Me", which was nominated for a Best R&B Performance Grammy Award. "Grapevyne" and "Pass the Lovin'" also brought them some success, as well as their rendition of "I Can't Tell You Why", a song originally recorded by The Eagles.

    Early life

    Nicci Gilbert was born in Detroit, Michigan to African-American parents. Gilbert grew up in Detroit, where her mother Helene was a jazz singer. Gilbert's mom did a lot to encourage her interest in music, and when she was in high school, Gilbert performed Madonna's "Crazy for You" in a talent show.

    After graduating from high school, Gilbert studied music and drama at Eastern Michigan University. But she ended up dropping out after two years so that she could move to Los Angeles with a friend and be closer to the music industry. It was a risky move, but one that eventually paid off for her. At first, Gilbert struggled there, where she appeared in various talent shows while paying her bills with non-musical "day gigs" (including a job at Taco Bell). But things started to pick up for Gilbert when, in , she formed Brownstone's original lineup with Monica Doby and Charmayne Maxwell.
