How Chris Gethard’s Depression Chronicle ‘Career Suicide’ Is A Gift To Fans Who’ve Shared Their Struggles

Chris Getharddoesn’t want you to worry about him, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t nervous.

“Permanence is not my usual M.O. and it’s pretty terrifying,” Gethard said, sitting in the Hollywood offices of Funny or Die last month. He smiled, but even he’ll admit that behind that grin, there’s the reserved bit of trepidation that comes before releasing a bit of yourself out into the world.

On Saturday, his comedy special “Chris Gethard: Career Suicide” will debut on HBO. In it, over the course of an hour and a half, Gethard details his decades-long relationship with depression, recounting his first experiences with a sinking sensation he couldn’t quite identify, all the way through impulsive suicide attempts, pieced-together blackout spells and the process of finding healthier, constructive ways to deal with all of those conflicting feelings and ideas.

Why 'The Chris Gethard Show' Is the Wildest Talk Show on TV

It's Thursday night, and Chris Gethardhas already broken his first pair of glasses of the evening. The audience in this midtown Manhattan broadcast studio are standing around a wrestling ring set up in the center of the room, cheering as loudly as they can. In one corner, a two-time world champion wrestler named Rhino circles the perimeter, his burly thighs rubbing together like two tan balloons. In the other is the 36-year-old comedian/talk-show host, unfazed by this behemoth of a man. Within seconds, the grappler has Gethard in the air,...

The Chris Gethard Show shoots Comedy Central pilot presentation

February 1, 2014

Hard work + a real budget + special guest Michael Cera = best TCGS episode ever.

After months of anticipation, we finally shot the Comedy Central pilot last week. The week we spent in the studio was one of the most joyous, raucous & chaotic weeks of my life, and everyone involved with the show was really, really happy with the work we did. The pilot, produced by Funny or Die (Will Ferrell) & Zach Galifianakis, was a half hour of exhilarating, manic fun. Special guest Michael Cera was totally game to jump into the oddball world of the show (see the pic of him crowd surfing below). Fans flew in from all over the world to attend the shoot, so the feeling in the studio was truly electric. Check out Splitsider’s great write-up about it.

    1. What is your favorite thing right now?
You know, I’m loving the newest season of “Mozart in the Jungle”. That show is normally one of my more light n’ fluffy TV indulgences, but… this season they went deeper with a #TimesUp-inspired plot line involving the leading lady’s struggles to be taken seriously as a conductor. As a female musician, I certainly know about sexism in the music world, but it’s really fascinating to see how that plays out in the classical music scene, which is not my scene at all. Smart feminism AND a good love story? I tell you, I’m into it.

    2. If money (and access) was no object, what frivolous thing would you buy or do today?

Maybe I’d buy an RV. I’ve already spent too much time online custom-designing what my dream RV would look like.

    3. Have you ever gone on a pilgrimage?

I used to dance professionally, and I once hurt my back so badly during a performance that I ended up struggling with chronic back pain for years afterwards. I was finally so desperate to be pain-free that I took a month-long trip to Mexico to try to heal myself. I lived alone in a thatch-roof cabana on the beach, meditating, journaling and doing physical therapy every day. It was like a boring version of “Eat. Pray. Love” without any of the juicy parts. And… it didn’t work! LOL. I came home in pretty much the same physical state I’d left in… but it was a transformative trip in other ways. Not everybody gets to take a trip like that, and I never regretted doing it.

I’m happy to say that, later that year, I started dating my now-husband. After about 4 months of our being together, my back pain pretty much disappeared. It was either a coincidence or proof of the healing power of love. Either way, I’m good now, don’t worry  <3

    4. What is your Kryptonite?

Spicy food. Can’t eat it. And I live in Jackson Heights, Queens which is known for its amazing authentic Indian, Thai, and Mexican food, so I’m truly like Superman living on a pi
