He may be best-known for his portrayal of John Lotter in 1999’s Boy’s Don’t Cry. Or as Charles Lane in the 2003’s Shattered Glass. Or perhaps for his roles in films like Garden State (2004), Green Lantern (2011), and Jackie (2016). Or maybe as the CIA chief in the 2018 Hulu miniseries The Looming Tower. Or it could be for his stage work, on Broadway and Off-Broadway, in plays such as The Seagull, Kingdom of Earth, and Burn This. For good reason, the 48-year-old is among the most talented, versatile, and unassuming actors working today. In large part, Sarsgaard’s prolific career and success stems from the fact that, beyond the screen and the stage, he has thoughtfully cultivated a rich array of interests: Running. Mandolin playing. Gardening and horticulture. Writing. On this episode of Time Sensitive, he speaks with Andrew Zuckerman about how each of these outside engagements continues to feed his life while also helping fuel his acting. Download Sarsgaard and Zuckerman discuss how Sarsgaard turned to long-distance running, largely through developing and writing a screenplay based on Christopher McDougall’s 2009 book Born to Run. Sarsgaard also talks about how a brief conversation he had with Tom Cruise at an Oscars party helped lead to him living a healthier overall lifestyle. Sarsgaard speaks about how a biopic of the famed 20th-century mandolinist, singer, and songwriter Bill Monroe—another movie project that fell apart—resulted in his learning how to play the mandolin. Sarsgaard and Zuckerman speak about two of Sarsgaard’s other deep interests: gardening and writing. Writing in particular has remained a constant practice of Sarsgaard’s. He tells Zuckerman his “perception of time gets as altered [when writing], as it would if I were on LSD American actor (1904–1980) For the English cricketer and footballer, see Raymond Bailey (sportsman). Bailey was born in San Francisco, California, the son of William and Alice (née O'Brien) Bailey. When he was a teenager he went to Hollywood to become a movie star. He found it was harder than he had thought, however, and took a variety of short-term jobs. He worked for a time as a day laborer at a movie studio in the days of silent pictures, but was fired for sneaking into a mob scene while it was being filmed. He also worked for a while as a stockbroker and a banker. Having no success receiving movie roles of any kind, Bailey then went to New York City where he had no better success obtaining roles in theatre. Eventually, he began working as a merchant seaman and sailed to various parts of the world, including China, Japan, the Philippines and the Mediterranean. While docked in Hawaii, he worked on a pineapple plantation, acted at the community theatre and sang on a local radio program. In 1938, he decided to try Hollywood again. His luck changed for the better when he actually began getting some bit parts in movies. He appeared as the character of Mr. West in the action adventure serial The Green
