Wide controversy has arisen since the newly inagurated President Jokowi decided to choose Ibu Susi Pudjiastuti as a Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries. Despite her undisputable achievements in business industry [1], her personal profile didn’t seems to fit quite well with the stereotype of a bright and intelligent female minister who usually holds a PhD degree. On the contrary, Ibu Susi is “only” a junior high school graduate, smoking, having tattoos, and series of marriages and divorces.
As a highly collectivist country [2], women in Indonesia are still expected to hold feminine values : calm, nurturing, well-mannered. To act outside the collective norms in such a prestige position in public, people will naturally become curious to know who is Bu Susi and to doubt her capability. It is not surprising that in the last several days, Bu Susi became the most widely publicized and the most discussed minister in media. However, debate on her personal attributes won’t come to an end since every citizen have diverse values due to different cultures and religions. Smoking and having tattoos can be totally acceptable in one culture but can be consider as undesired personality traits for woman in another culture, and so far no evidence shows that it correlates with her work performance.
For me, what is even more interesting is that when academicians and experts in ocean regret her capacity. This is a quite crucial issue since the objection is on her capacity to hold such strategic position. An ocean engineering doctor from ITB doubted that “whether Ibu Susi understand the knowledge ofmarine products economics,coastal processes,andunderwater technology" [3]. His statement leads me to a question : should a person who is coming from pure technical background hold the position of a minister?

Biografi Susi Pudjiastuti Singkat Beliau lahir pada tanggal 15 Januari 1965 di Pangandaran dengan nama lengkap Susi Pudjiastuti. Ia memiliki Ayah bernama Haji Ahmad Karlan serta ibu yang bernama Hajjah Suwuh Lasminah yang berasal dari Jawa Tengah.
